Did you put together a 2010 New Year resolution list together? 

I did, not like in the past where I wrote it down, but I complied a list in my head.  Yes, I know, it's more successful if you put it on paper!  However, it didn't happen this year like I had planned.  How about you?  Did you get a list together?  Did you put everything on there that you wanted, didn't want?  Do you think you could replace one or two?

I know I'm thinking twice about losing those pounds!  I can tell you this, I have blown it several times.  Perhaps writing them down keeps you a bit more accountable!

This is where this post comes in, something that has evaded me over the years is becoming more dedicated to recycling. I have to admit, I stink at it!  Call it 'too lazy', or just 'don't want to be bothered' is no excuse!**  I pay my monthly bill for my nifty blue recycle bin and it goes empty almost nine months out of the year!  It's a shame, I admit it.

So, here's where 'accountability' comes in, I'm publicly announcing my added resolution for 2010 and no less on the Internet!

I'm going to make all efforts to become more conscience of recycling and taking the time to do what is required to use that 'blue bin' I so gladly pay for each month. 

 

So what a better way to get started than to  attend with other Gilbert residents  and locals to the 'Spring Toward a Cleaner Gilbert' event that is offering their tips and ideas with a free forum 6 p.m. Tuesday at Gilbert's Town Hall. 

The forum will be televised and held at Town Hall located at 50 E. Civic Center Drive.  It will feature ways to go green using free Gilbert Town services. Make the most of our unique Town recycling services that allow you to recycle glass, aluminum and paper – as well as even hazardous wastes, or computers (I have several old computers in my garage)!

Did You Know?

• Town of Gilbert offered a white goods pickup for appliances?
  
• You could recycle cooking grease to be used for fuel?

Residents can learn how to save big on their water bills, inside and out. Experts will answer questions on how the town’s upcoming General Plan features environmentally friendly incentives, and how an environmental task force is working to promote our green programs in Town. From 1996 to 2006, Gilbert, Arizona issued more than 3,000 home permits every year but one, according to U.S. Census Bureau statistics. In 2004, that number peaked at 5,071.  Several years of declines in the Phoenix housing market, Gilbert, AZ saw positive growth in 2009 in the new-home permits since the record breaking peak of 2004.  A great sign that Gilbert is recovering and growing again!

Permits issued in 2008 were a mild 1,109 and the amount for 2009 rose to 1,275 last year! Not a significant difference but it is a difference and it's up, not down! 

Pulte Homes in October acquired 107 lots in Stratland Estates, which will be Pulte's first foray into the Gilbert market. Pulte Homes spokeswoman Jacque Petroulakis said the company has high hopes for the Gilbert area.  Gilbert has several perks for homebuyers, including freeway access, local shopping, good schools and plentiful parks, Petroulakis said.  I can't agree with her more!

Some of the neighborhoods that have seen recent increases in activity include Freeman Farms, Higley Park, Lyons Gate and Morrison Ranch.

The 110-acre Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch is located at 2757 E. Guadalupe Road east of Greenfield Road, next to the Southeast Regional Library in Gilbert, Arizona. At the Riparian Preserve over 200 species of birds can be seen throughout the year. There are 4.5 miles of walking trails, and fishing at the recreation lake at Water Ranch. This unique area was designed to utilize recycled water to create community wetland wildlife sanctuaries for recreation, education, and research. Heritage District An officially recognized and established historic area, the Heritage District marks the original Gilbert town site and is still the historic center of the community. The Heritage District includes one-of-a-kind restaurants, shops and offices.

The Hale Centre Theatre has a legendary heritage as the longest continuously running, privately owned and operated theater company in America. You can find it now in the Heritage District in downtown Gilbert, presenting a variety of theatrical performances.

Gilbert Town Square, an urban village created by Triple Five Arizona Development, features a 14-screen megaplex theater, retail shops and restaurants.

Gilbert Days November marks Gilbert Days, a unique, three-day celebration that marks the paving of Gilbert Road through downtown. Gilbert Days provides fun-filled activities for the entire family including the Gilbert Days 5K Run and 1 Mile Fun Run, a parade through downtown, and IPRA Rodeo action and carnival that takes places at Gilbert Rodeo Park.

Gilbert Historical Society Museum The town's history has been captured in the Gilbert Historical Society Museum. Located in a building that was once the original Town School at 10 S. Gilbert Road.

Freestone Skate Park From the novice in-line skater to the extreme skateboarder, Gilbert's 22,000 sq. ft. skate park offers features that accommodate all skill levels. The skate park located in Freestone Park offers free, non-supervised skating to visitors.

Freestone Park Gilbert's flagship park truly is a wonderful place to visit and play. Freestone Park features ball fields, sport courts, a train, batting cage concession, playgrounds and picnic ramadas for visitors to enjoy. Located at the park you will also find and amphitheatre, Gilbert's Skate Park and the Freestone Recreation Center.

Crossroads Dog Park This dog park is on the west side of Greenfield Road, south of Warner Road. The dog park hours are 6 a.m.- 10 p.m., seven days per week. 2155 E. Knox Road.

Cosmo Park is located at the northeast corner of Ray Road and the Santan Loop 202 in Gilbert. Hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The park features a lighted fenced dog park.
